How the BACB fieldwork rules work
To sit for the BCBA exam you must complete supervised fieldwork under a qualified supervisor. There are two pathways: Supervised Fieldwork (2,000 hours) and Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork (1,500 hours). A few rules trip candidates up:
- Restricted activities are capped. No more than 60% of your fieldwork hours, averaged across each period, may be restricted activities (e.g., direct implementation). At least 40% must be unrestricted — see restricted vs. unrestricted hours.
- Monthly supervision minimum. Each supervisory period, supervision must cover at least 5% of your hours on the Supervised pathway, or 10% on the Concentrated pathway — with the required number of supervision contacts.
- Monthly caps. Hours are accrued in monthly periods (commonly 20–130 hours per period count). Documentation must be signed and dated on time.
