BCBA Exam Eligibility & Application: The Step-by-Step Checklist
Applying for the BCBA exam is a multi-step process with prerequisites that build on each other. The BACB requires you to demonstrate that you meet three independent eligibility criteria before it will accept your application — and each criterion has its own documentation standard. A complete, compliant application results in an authorization to test (ATT) and access to Pearson VUE scheduling. An incomplete or non-compliant application gets returned, sometimes with a delay that affects your exam window.
This guide walks through each prerequisite in sequence — degree, coursework, fieldwork — then covers the application itself, Pearson VUE scheduling mechanics, and what to have organized before you start.
The requirements described here apply to candidates applying under the current 2022 BACB standards. Applications received on or after January 1, 2027 must meet the updated 2027 requirements. If your application date is uncertain, verify which set of standards applies at bacb.com.
This article provides administrative guidance only. It is not legal advice, clinical advice, or BACB-official guidance. Always verify current eligibility requirements directly with the BACB BCBA Handbook before submitting your application.
Prerequisite 1: Graduate-Level Degree
The BACB requires a graduate degree — master’s or doctoral level — from a regionally or nationally accredited institution. The degree does not have to be specifically in behavior analysis, but it must be at the graduate level.
Key points:
- The degree must be conferred before you submit your application. You cannot apply with an in-progress degree, even if you expect to graduate within months.
- The accreditation of the granting institution is verified by the BACB. Degrees from unaccredited institutions are not accepted.
- The BACB accepts degrees from institutions outside the United States, but may require a credential evaluation by a NACES-member organization to confirm equivalency.
What you need for your application: Official transcripts showing the conferred graduate degree. “Official” means transcripts sent directly from the institution (electronic or sealed paper) — not copies you handle yourself.
Prerequisite 2: Verified Coursework
The BACB requires completion of a defined behavior analysis coursework sequence at the graduate level. The coursework must cover all of the areas specified in the BACB’s coursework requirements and be verified by a BACB Approved Course Sequence (BACB ACS) coordinator.
What the Coursework Must Cover
The coursework sequence must address the content areas identified in the BCBA Handbook. These areas broadly correspond to the content domains of the BCBA exam — philosophical underpinnings, concepts and principles, measurement, experimental design, ethics, and behavior change procedures — but the specific content requirements are set by the BACB and have been updated over time.
The most current content requirements for your application cohort are in the BCBA Handbook. Do not rely on a summary from your training program unless it cites the specific BACB handbook version it references.
BACB Approved Course Sequences
Most candidates complete their coursework through a BACB Approved Course Sequence (BACB ACS) — a graduate program that has been verified by the BACB to cover the required content. If you completed your coursework through a BACB ACS program, the coursework verification is handled by your ACS coordinator, who submits verification directly to the BACB on your behalf.
If your graduate program is not a BACB ACS, your coursework may still qualify — but you are responsible for demonstrating that the content of your completed courses maps to the BACB’s requirements. This is a more involved process and may require working with the BACB directly. Start early if this applies to you.
What you need: Either a confirmed submission from your ACS coordinator or, if not through a BACB ACS, course syllabi and transcripts that demonstrate coverage of required content areas.
Prerequisite 3: Completed Fieldwork
Fieldwork is the longest prerequisite on the timeline. The BACB requires completion of one of two fieldwork types, or a combination of both:
Supervised Fieldwork (SF): 2,000 total hours, with at least 5% supervised (100 supervision hours minimum). The supervision requirement includes minimum monthly contacts, individual vs. group breakdowns, and direct client observation requirements.
Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork (CSF): 1,500 total hours, with at least 10% supervised (150 supervision hours minimum). CSF hours carry a 1.33× multiplier when blending with SF hours.
All fieldwork must be:
- Accrued within a five-consecutive-year window from the date of the first logged hour
- Supervised by a qualified BCBA (or BCBA-D) who had a written supervision contract in place before hours were logged
- Documented on monthly Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms (M-FVFs), signed by both trainee and supervisor within one month of the period covered
- Composed of at least 60% unrestricted activities (the restricted activity cap is 40%)
What you need for your application: All signed M-FVFs covering your entire accrual period, organized chronologically. You will submit these — or a summary verification — as part of the application process. The BACB may request supporting documentation in an audit. Both you and your supervisor must retain signed copies for at least seven years.

Pre-Application Checklist
Before you start the application process, gather and verify the following:
Degree Documentation
- Graduate degree conferred (not in progress)
- Official transcripts ordered from your institution (institution to BACB direct, or electronic through a BACB-accepted platform)
- If international degree: credential evaluation completed through a NACES-member organization
Coursework Documentation
- BACB ACS program confirmed — contact your ACS coordinator to confirm they have your records and will submit verification
- If not a BACB ACS: syllabi and transcripts assembled to demonstrate content coverage; BACB contacted about the verification process
- Coursework verification submitted to BACB (or confirmed with your ACS coordinator that it will be submitted before your application)
Fieldwork Documentation
- Total hours calculated — confirm SF (2,000) or CSF (1,500) minimum is met, accounting for any CSF multiplier
- Five-year window verified — first logged hour date + 5 years is after your application date
- Restricted vs. unrestricted split verified — restricted hours are ≤40% of your total
- All M-FVFs accounted for — one per month for every month with logged hours, signed by both you and your supervisor
- Supervision minimums verified for each month (≥4 contacts/month for SF, ≥6 for CSF; ≥50% individual; ≥1 direct client observation per month)
- Signed M-FVFs organized chronologically and in your possession
- Supervision contract(s) on file for your records
BACB Account
- BACB online account created at bacb.com
- Profile information complete and current (legal name matches your ID exactly — the name on your BACB account must match the name on the ID you bring to the Pearson VUE testing center)
- Continuing education and background check requirements reviewed (the application process includes a background check attestation)
Submitting Your BACB Application
Applications are submitted through your BACB online account. The process includes:
-
Initiate the application in your BACB account. The system will prompt you to confirm which set of requirements you are applying under (2022 vs. 2027).
-
Submit degree verification. Either upload the transcript confirmation from your institution or confirm that your institution has submitted electronically. The BACB will not process the application until degree verification is received.
-
Confirm coursework verification. If you are in a BACB ACS program, this will show as pending until your coordinator submits. Check with your coordinator — do not assume it was submitted automatically.
-
Submit fieldwork verification. The BACB’s system will guide you through uploading or entering your fieldwork documentation. Ensure M-FVF data is entered accurately — discrepancies between what you enter and what your supervisor attested to can trigger a review.
-
Pay the application fee. The current BCBA application fee is listed on the BACB examination information page. Fees are subject to change; verify the current amount at the time of your application.
-
Background check. The BACB uses a third-party background check provider. You will receive instructions in your application portal. Complete it promptly — this step can add days to processing time.
-
Application review. The BACB reviews your application for completeness and eligibility. This review period varies; check the BACB’s posted processing times. If there are deficiencies, you will receive notice and a window to provide additional documentation.
-
Authorization to Test (ATT) issued. Once approved, you receive an ATT. The ATT has an expiration date — you must schedule and sit for the exam before it expires.
Scheduling at Pearson VUE
The BCBA exam is administered by Pearson VUE at professional testing centers. Once you have your ATT:
- Create a Pearson VUE account (or log in if you have one from a prior exam).
- Schedule your exam — search for testing centers near you, and check availability for dates within your ATT window.
- Pay the Pearson VUE exam fee at the time of scheduling. The current fee is listed on the BACB examination information page.
- Confirm your appointment — you will receive a confirmation with the testing center address, date, time, and check-in instructions.
What to Know Before Test Day
- Acceptable ID: Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport) with your name matching your BACB account exactly. A name mismatch can prevent you from sitting for the exam.
- Arrival: Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Late arrivals may be turned away and forfeit the exam fee.
- What is not allowed: No personal items in the testing room — phones, notes, bags, watches. The testing center will provide a locker.
- Exam format: 160 questions total; 150 scored. The BACB’s examination overview provides the content domain breakdown.
- Score reporting: Scores are reported at the testing center immediately after the exam. A scaled score of 500 or higher is passing (on the 0–750 scale used for the BCBA exam).
- Retake policy: If you do not pass, you must wait a minimum of 30 days before your next attempt. The BACB limits attempts per eligibility period — check the current handbook for specifics.
After Passing: Getting Your Certification Active
Passing the exam is not the final step. After your score is confirmed:
- BACB processes certification. There is typically a processing lag between your test date and your BACB certification appearing as active in the BACB certificant registry.
- Do not bill under your BCBA credential until your certification is verified active in the registry. Billing before certification is formally active creates compliance risk.
- Begin tracking your CE requirements. BCBA recertification requires 32 continuing education units per two-year cycle, with specific distribution requirements (ethics units, supervision units). Your CE cycle begins on your certification date.
Application Timeline: Working Backward from Your Target Exam Date
If you have a target exam month in mind, work backward:
| Milestone | Working Backwards |
|---|---|
| Take the exam | Target month |
| ATT received / Pearson VUE scheduling | 2–4 weeks before target |
| BACB application submitted | 6–8 weeks before target (allow for review time) |
| All M-FVFs signed and organized | 1–2 weeks before application submission |
| Final fieldwork hour logged | 4–6 weeks before application |
| Coursework verification confirmed with ACS coordinator | 8+ weeks before application |
| Transcripts ordered | 8+ weeks before application |
Processing times vary and the BACB publishes updated estimates on its website. Build in buffer — especially for coursework verification and transcript receipt, which are outside your direct control.

The Bottom Line
The BCBA application process is methodical, not mysterious. Each prerequisite has clear documentation requirements; the application itself is a structured submission through your BACB account; and Pearson VUE scheduling follows a straightforward process once your ATT is issued.
The candidates who run into trouble are typically those who discover a documentation gap — a missing M-FVF, an ACS verification that was never submitted, a degree transcript that went to the wrong place — when they are trying to submit quickly. Organizing your documentation throughout your fieldwork period rather than at the end eliminates most of those surprises.
