BCaBA Fieldwork Requirements: A Practical Guide (2026)
The BCaBA credential sits between the RBT and the BCBA on the BACB’s certification ladder — expanded scope, but a permanent supervisory obligation that does not end at certification. Incomplete fieldwork logs are the most common reason hours are disqualified during a BACB audit, and the standard is unambiguous: if you cannot produce signed monthly verification forms, those hours did not count.
This guide covers the verified BACB fieldwork hour requirements, what logs must capture each month, and the ongoing supervision obligation that continues after certification.
What the BCaBA Credential Is (and Is Not)
The Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) is the BACB’s undergraduate-level certification in behavior analysis. The three credentials form a clear hierarchy:
RBT: High school diploma, 40 hours of training, 100% supervision. Implements programming; does not design it.
BCaBA: Bachelor’s degree, verified coursework, completed fieldwork. Can design and oversee behavior-analytic programs — but only under ongoing BCBA supervision. They cannot practice independently at any stage of their career.
BCBA: Graduate degree, more fieldwork, independent practice. Supervises RBTs and BCaBAs.
The key distinction: a BCaBA’s supervision requirement is a permanent maintenance condition, not a training phase. A BCaBA without an active BCBA supervisor on record with the BACB must place their credential on inactive status.
BCaBA Eligibility Requirements
Before reaching fieldwork, BCaBA candidates must meet the following, as set out in the BCaBA Handbook (updated January 2026):
Degree: A bachelor’s degree or higher from a qualifying institution. Starting January 1, 2027, international applicants under Pathway 1 must hold a degree equivalent to a US bachelor’s degree.
Coursework: Completed at the undergraduate level, covering the BACB’s required content areas (principles of behavior, measurement, experimental design, ethical and professional conduct, and others). One semester credit hour equals 15 hours of classroom instruction.
Two application pathways exist. Pathway 1 requires an accredited behavior analysis degree program. Pathway 2 requires individual course verification; as of January 1, 2026, Pathway 2 applications require a Coursework Attestation from a designated program contact.
BCaBA Fieldwork Hour Requirements
This is where most candidates and their supervisors need to be precise. The BACB supervised fieldwork FAQ and fieldwork guidance establish the following for BCaBA candidates:
Two Fieldwork Types
Supervised Fieldwork (SF): A minimum of 1,000 hours total. During each calendar month of fieldwork, at least 5% of total fieldwork hours must be supervised hours. Monthly supervision contacts must include at least 4 supervisory contacts, with at least 50% of those as individual (one-on-one) supervision. At least one contact must involve direct observation of the trainee providing services.
Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork (CSF): A minimum of 750 hours total. During each calendar month, at least 10% of total fieldwork hours must be supervised hours. Monthly supervision contacts must include at least 6 supervisory contacts, with at least 50% as individual supervision.
Combining Both Types
Candidates may combine SF and CSF. When combining, CSF hours carry a 1.3x multiplier — each CSF hour counts as 1.3 SF hours for purposes of meeting the total requirement. The combined total, after applying the multiplier, must reach 1,300 weighted hours. Note that this multiplier is for the candidate’s personal tracking only; official monthly verification forms are completed using actual hours, not weighted totals.
Monthly Caps and Accrual Window
- Maximum 160 fieldwork hours per month (both types combined)
- All fieldwork must be accrued within 5 consecutive years from the first month hours are logged
- Breaks are permitted; the 5-year clock does not pause for breaks
The Unrestricted vs. Restricted Activity Split
The BACB fieldwork guidance requires BCaBA candidates to complete at least 40% of supervised fieldwork hours as unrestricted activities. This means restricted activities may make up no more than 60% of total fieldwork hours.
Restricted activities involve directly implementing therapeutic or instructional procedures with a client — essentially what an RBT already does. For someone acquiring BCaBA fieldwork hours, restricted time alone is insufficient.
Unrestricted activities are the higher-order work BCaBA training is designed to build: conducting behavior assessments, designing and revising intervention plans, analyzing data, training caregivers and staff, and writing program documentation.
Activities that never count: billing and coding, RBT training events, exam preparation, CPR training, conference attendance, and university coursework itself. Your supervisor determines which activities count — when in doubt, ask before accruing hours, not after.
What BCaBA Fieldwork Logs Must Capture
The BACB fieldwork documentation FAQ makes the documentation standard explicit: both the trainee and the supervisor must maintain independent copies of all verification forms. There are two forms in play.
Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form
Completed and signed at the end of every calendar month. Required fields include:
- BACB ID for both trainee and supervisor
- Total supervised fieldwork hours for the month (SF and CSF logged separately)
- Total unrestricted and restricted hours for the month
- Total supervision hours for the month, with individual vs. group breakdown
- Number of supervisory contacts, including the observation contact
- Supervisor signature attesting that monthly requirements were met
- Trainee signature
- Date signed — must be signed within the month or shortly after; retroactive backdating is not acceptable
For trainees working with multiple supervisors, the responsible supervisor (the one who coordinates the overall experience) signs the monthly form. The form covers hours with all supervisors that month.
Final Fieldwork Verification Form
Submitted with the certification application. It aggregates totals from all monthly forms, lists all supervisors (name, BACB ID, credential), and must be signed by the responsible supervisor. If CSF and SF hours were both accrued, they are documented separately with the actual (non-multiplied) hour counts.
The Audit Risk
The BACB audits fieldwork documentation. The standard is simple: if you cannot produce a signed monthly verification form for a given month, those hours will not be accepted. The BACB also recommends opening and re-saving the Final Fieldwork Verification Form before submitting it — file corruption has caused submitted totals to display incorrectly.
Supervisors should co-sign monthly forms within the month. Waiting until the final application to reconcile months of records is a significant operational risk.

Who Can Supervise BCaBA Fieldwork
Only a currently credentialed BCBA or BCBA-D may supervise BCaBA fieldwork hours. Licensed or registered psychologists are eligible for ongoing post-certification supervision of BCaBAs, but for the fieldwork experience itself, a BCBA is the required supervisor.
Before providing supervision, the BCBA must have completed the 8-hour supervision training based on the BACB’s Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline (2.0). This is a prerequisite — a BCBA who has not completed the training cannot provide approvable supervision. If your supervisor has not completed this training, those hours will not be credited.
For setting up compliant supervision documentation from the supervisor side, including hour-tracking workflows and monthly sign-off procedures, see BCBA Fieldwork Hours Tracking.
Ongoing Supervision After BCaBA Certification
Earning the BCaBA does not end the supervision requirement. This is a structural feature of the credential that distinguishes it from every other BACB certification.
According to the BACB’s supervision requirements:
- A certificated BCaBA must receive ongoing supervision from a BCBA as a condition of maintaining the credential
- At least 5% of behavior-analytic service hours must be supervised each month
- If a BCaBA does not have an active supervisor of record with the BACB, the credential is considered inactive and the BCaBA may not practice or represent themselves as a BCaBA
This has direct administrative implications for any organization employing BCaBAs. If the supervising BCBA leaves, transfers roles, or goes on leave, a replacement must be identified and registered with the BACB before the BCaBA continues providing behavior-analytic services. There is no grace period built into the credential maintenance requirement.
The BCaBA Supervision Meeting Form (available from the BACB) is the documentation vehicle for ongoing supervision contacts. Maintain completed forms in the BCaBA’s employment or credentialing file, separate from fieldwork records.
Upcoming 2027 Changes
The BACB has published substantive BCaBA requirement changes effective January 1, 2027, detailed on the upcoming changes page. Changes affect degree eligibility, coursework pathway requirements, and ongoing supervision obligations. The 2027 rules apply to applications submitted on or after January 1, 2027 — candidates who apply before that date are evaluated under current requirements.
If your BCaBA candidates or employees are mid-fieldwork with a January 2027 or later target application date, review the 2027 BCaBA Requirements document with them now. Fieldwork started under current rules may need to meet different ongoing supervision documentation standards upon application.

Common Documentation Pitfalls
Based on BACB guidance across their fieldwork documentation resources:
Missing monthly verification forms. The single most consequential error. Hours that cannot be verified by a signed monthly form do not count, regardless of how well the work was done. Set a recurring calendar event for the last day of each month.
Supervisor not completing the 8-hour training before supervision begins. Hours supervised by an ineligible supervisor will not be credited. Confirm training status before the first supervision contact.
Logging CSF multiplied hours on official forms. The 1.3x multiplier is a conversion tool for personal planning, not an input on verification forms. Record actual hours only.
Exceeding the restricted-activity cap. If unrestricted activities make up less than 40% of total hours, the hours that push past the 60% restricted ceiling will need to be addressed. Track the ratio monthly, not at the end of the experience.
Conflating RBT supervision with BCaBA fieldwork supervision. If an RBT is simultaneously accruing BCaBA fieldwork hours, the supervision contacts must be documented separately under each role. A supervision session that covers both cannot double-count as both RBT supervision and BCaBA fieldwork supervision. For how RBT onboarding documentation interacts with this, see RBT Onboarding and Competency Assessment Documentation.
Letting hours lapse past the 5-year window. Fieldwork accrued in the first month of a period that is not completed within five consecutive years will require starting over. Track the window start date from the first month a monthly form is filed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a BCaBA supervise their own fieldwork hours? No. A qualified BCBA must provide all supervision contacts. There are no exceptions.
Does fieldwork need to be in a single ABA setting? No. Hours may be accrued across multiple settings and supervisors, provided supervision is documented separately for each and the 5-year window is respected.
What happens if a monthly supervision minimum is missed? Hours accrued in that month will generally not count toward the total. There is no mechanism to retroactively add supervision to a past month. Address gaps as soon as they are discovered — not at application time.
How long should fieldwork records be kept? Retain all signed monthly and final verification forms indefinitely, or at minimum for the duration of any credentialing relationship with the BACB.
Tracking BCaBA fieldwork hours accurately across multiple candidates is an operational task, not just a compliance exercise. The BCaBA Fieldwork Hours Tracker is designed to log monthly hours, flag the unrestricted activity ratio, and maintain the running supervision percentage so nothing falls through at audit time.
