How the ASHA CF requirements actually work
The Clinical Fellowship is the supervised professional experience between your graduate program and your CCC-SLP. Four separate gates have to be cleared — and hitting one does not excuse another:
- 1,260 hours and 36 weeks — both, not either. Full-time is defined as 35 hours a week. Crucially, working extra hours cannot shorten the 36-week clock. If you log 1,260 hours in 25 weeks, you are not finished; you still owe 11 weeks.
- Weeks under 5 hours count for nothing. A week with fewer than 5 hours of professional experience contributes neither hours nor week-credit — it is not partially counted, it is skipped.
- At least 80% direct client contact. 80% of your major responsibilities must be direct client/patient contact — assessment, treatment, screening, counselling, report writing and recordkeeping related to case management. This is a ratio, so you can reach 1,260 hours and still fail it.
- 6 + 6 mentoring hours in each of the 3 segments. Your mentor must provide at least 6 hours of direct observation and 6 hours of other mentoring per segment (18 + 18 across the CF). Front-loading supervision into segment 1 does not cover segment 3 — each segment stands alone. If you change mentor or job, each must independently fulfil the time and mentorship requirements.

What's changing on 1 August 2027
ASHA's 2027 certification standards take effect for applications received on or after 1 August 2027. Per ASHA's own standards crosswalk, the core CF numbers — 1,260 hours, 36 weeks, 3 segments, the 80% ratio and the 6 + 6 mentoring — are marked "No change." The substantive change is telepractice: today up to 25% of your direct client contact hours may be earned via telepractice, but any CF segment beginning on or after 1 August 2027 may be up to 100% telepractice and 100% telesupervision. Which standards apply to you is determined by the date ASHA receives your application — not by the date you started.
